Hand-painted, dyed, and eco-printed silk scarves

How they are made

When painting silk, it is typically stretched and suspended using a frame and tensioners. Paint can be applied freehand, or the silk can be dampened so colors will blend. Different textures can be obtained by using salts, sugars, alcohol, textured objects, and other materials.

When eco-printing, silk is scoured and mordanted with a natural element to accept the tannins of the leaves or flowers. Blacks or colored effects are formed with an organically processed 'blanket' placed over the silk. The silk scarf, materials and blanket are wrapped tightly around a dowel and steamed for about an hour. The final scarf is very silky soft!
